DSP-Scora manufactures calcium and magnesium products for the food industry. The company supplies magnesium and calcium dietary supplements and active ingredients for application as food additives or for the production of direct dosage mineral supplements.
MAGNESIUM AND CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTATION BY DOSAGE REGIMES
Magnesium and calcium are generally supplied in dietary supplements for dosage regimes in the form of mineral tablets often in conjunction with other vital macro- and microelements and vitamins. Magnesium and calcium deficiency is also combated by fortifying foods with suitable magnesium and calcium compounds during its processing.
MAGNESIUM AND CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTATION BY FOOD FORTIFICATION
Use of DSP-Scora magnesium compounds or Scoralite as food additives is an excellent way of achieving magnesium and calcium RDI’s without the need for daily tablet swallowing. Both magnesium and calcium can be incorporated into the following food products to give mineral fortified products:
- Nutrition bars and energy bars
- Cereals and cereal bars
- Confectionaries and bread
- Ice cream
- Health beverages
- Yoghurts and dairy products
MAGNESIA PRODUCTS AS FUNCTIONAL FOOD ADDITIVES
Magnesia products are also offer functional food additive benefits to the food industry. These include:
- Desiccant / free-flowing agents: used in soft drink powders, soup powders and salt
- pH control: used in the processing of acidic foods such as citrus products
- Chemical modification: alpha acids to iso alpha acids in hops for beer
- Colour stabilization: used as an additive in the chemical processing of green vegetable foods
DIETARY MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is essential for a healthy diet, with European and US Health Organizations recommending a daily intake (RDI) of about 400mg for adults. Magnesium deficiency caused by intake of magnesium below the RDI, compromises cellular activity, especially in the heart, nerves and kidneys.
Magnesium influences platelet aggregation, blood thinning and the relaxation of blood vessels. Magnesium can improve blood oxygenation by improving cardiac contractibility.
While a normal diet could supply the RDI for magnesium, modern lifestyles favour the use of processed foods from which much natural nutritional value is lost. For example, it has been estimated that approximately 85% of the magnesium content of whole wheat flour is lost in its processing to white flour.
DIETARY CALCIUM
Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by loss of calcium and weakening of the bones, resulting in increased incidence of bone fracture.
It is most prevalent among post-menopausal women, but occurs among all age groups of both sexes. Prevention of osteoporosis is aimed at ensuring sufficient ingestion of calcium especially for children, adolescents and pregnant women.
The RDI for calcium is 1,000mg to 1,500mg. Modern dietary styles have led to increasing dietary calcium deficiency. In response, the EU has identified prevention of osteoporosis as one of its major health goals.
PURITY
All DSP-Scora magnesium and calcium products meet the stringent purity requirements of the USP, BP and EP, as well as the FCC. All DSP-Scora magnesia products are characterized by extremely low levels of all metals and specifically by low levels of lead, being easily in conformance with Proposition 65 for lead.
