The news comes a few months after Freiberger announced plans for a new frozen pizza production facility in the UK.

Freiberger, the Germany-based pizza manufacturer, has set out plans to expand its plant in Berlin.

The private-label manufacturer, which is based in the German capital, said its site is being “modernised” and “accessibility is being brought up to date in order to significantly expand capacity here”.

The project is part of Freiberger's efforts to spend “hundreds of millions” to expand its pizza business, investment that already includes the construction of a new factory in the UK.

Freiberger said construction work at its Berlin base. It is already investing in the logistics infrastructure and office space at the headquarters in Berlin-Reinickendorf.

Just Food has contacted Freiberger for further details.

In a statement, Thorid Klantschitsch, Freiberger's CEO, said: “With our investments in the capital, we are not only expanding our capacities and strengthening our market position at one of the most important locations in Germany. We are also improving the working environment for our current and future employees and strengthening our cost leadership.

“As a company with a long tradition, it is important to us to be an attractive employer and to make a sustainable contribution to local economic development.”

The news comes a few months after Freiberger announced a €45m ($49.7m) investment into a new frozen pizza production facility at its UK subsidiary, Stateside Foods.

That funding went towards building a new plant specifically for frozen pizza products on Stateside Foods’ manufacturing site in Bolton, close to Manchester.

The construction of the factory started in 2023, according to Freiberger. Production at the plant is expected to start by the first quarter of next year.

In July, Freiberger’s US-based subsidiary Richelieu Foods divested its sauces and dressings division to Italy's Amalfi to focus on its pizza business.

German sugar giant Südzucker, which wholly owns Freiberger, acquired Richelieu Foods in a $435m deal back in 2017.

Set up in 1976, Freiberger manufactures savoury baked products, including chilled and frozen pizzas, tarte flambées, ready-to-eat pasta meals, bread snacks and baguettes, pizza snacks and hot dogs. Its goods are sold in 30 European countries, as well as US, Canadian and South African markets.

Freiberger has been wholly owned by Suedzucker since 1998.
