Major German grocer Edeka has struck a deal to buy dairy manufacturer Uckermärker Milch for an undisclosed sum. 

The acquisition is scheduled for 1 March, pending approval from anti-trust officials. All roughly 110 employees will remain with the company, Edeka said in a statement.

Edeka said the acquisition secures the future of one of north-eastern Germany's last independent dairies. 

With a history dating back to 1889, the dairy plant is in Germany’s Uckermark region and was founded in its current form in 1992. 

In 2014, Swiss baby food maker Hochdorf acquired a 60% stake in Uckermärker Milch, with the remaining stake retained by Berlin-based Ostmilch Handels. 

Six years later, Hochdorf sold its stake in the dairy company back to Ostmilch Handels.

Uckermarker Milch is already a supplier to Edeka, producing quark, butter, and milk powder.

Edeka, one of Germany's largest food retailers, owns manufacturing assets to support its supply chain.

In 2022, the company acquired the remaining 55% stake in family-run bakery H von Allwörden.  

At the time, the company said the deal positions it “for the future in the baked goods segment”.
