European frozen potato products producer Agristo is set to expand its global footprint by establishing its first US production facility in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The Belgian company is also expanding its production capacity in Europe as “meeting increasing demand” in the region is its “core focus”.

Developments are ongoing at its Wielsbeke site in Belgium, with preparatory work also under way for a new plant in Escaudoeuvres, France.

The company took over the Escaudoeuvres site, which is expected to be operational in 2027, from sugar producer Tereos.

Agristo said: “These investments are designed to support growth and ensure we can meet future market needs efficiently.”

Previously, the French fires maker ventured outside Europe with an operation in India through the Agristo Masa joint venture.

Its decision to select Grand Forks was influenced by the state's “strong agricultural community” and “deep expertise” in potato farming, it said.

“North Dakota’s vast agricultural land and favourable growing conditions proved ideal during extensive tests of potato varieties. These trials demonstrated exceptional potential for optimal crop yield and quality,” the company added.

It said ity expects the region's “expansive land and development-friendly policies” to create “ample room for future growth”, aligning with its goal to grow alongside increasing market demand.

Agristo has collaborated with American farmers to test potato varieties.

The initial investment for the Grand Forks site is projected at €437.3m ($450m) in the first phase and groundbreaking is scheduled for later this year.

Agristo said its new US facility is anticipated to create 300 to 350 direct jobs and stimulate indirect investments in agriculture and supply chains.

Founded in 1986, the company caters to more than 540 customers in 130 countries.
