Fastfood chain Wendy’s is adding a low-fat, strawberry-flavoured yoghurt cup with granola to its menu.
“Earlier this year, we introduced fresh fruit bowl that features high quality, premium fruit and a great-tasting yoghurt for dipping. Based on the positive feedback we’ve received from customers, we have decided to offer yoghurt as a separate menu option,” said Tom Mueller, president, Wendy’s North America.
“It’s another example of how we are continuing to evolve and expand our menu to give our customers more choices that are tasty and nutritious.”
The 2005 edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, issued by the US Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, recommends that Americans consume three cups daily of milk, cheese or yoghurt, Wendy’s said. Yoghurt is loaded with calcium (one cup has 300 mg), is a good source of protein (10 grams per cup) and is rich in B vitamins.
Total yoghurt sales in the US in 2004 were $2.8bn, a 7.7% increase from 2003. Yoghurt sales rose 87% from 1994 to 2004.
