US ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s, owned by Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant Unilever, has said it is introducing three new flavours of ice cream made with Fair Trade coffee.

The new flavours – Coffee Heath Bar Crunch, Coffee Coffee Buzz Buzz Buzz and Coffee – are made with a coffee extract that has been certified as Fair Trade by TransFair USA, an independent, third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the US.

Fair Trade certification aims to ensure that small-scale farmers in developing countries are paid a fair price for their crops.

Ben & Jerry’s said it is the first ice cream maker in the US to introduce coffee flavours made with Fair Trade Certified coffee.

“By transitioning all of our coffee extract to Fair Trade Certified, Ben & Jerry’s hopes to help increase incomes for coffee producers,” said Yola Carlough, head of social mission for Ben & Jerry’s.
