nator has proposed a bill to protect food companies from lawsuits alleging that their high-fat foods cause obesity.
“You shouldn’t be able to sue someone else because of your own eating habits,” Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell was quoted by Reuters as saying.
The proposed legislation would only apply to lawsuits claiming injury from weight gain or obesity, and would not block other legal action involving the food industry.
McConnell, the second-ranking Republican Senate leader and sponsor of the “Commonsense Consumption Act”, said he did not think the proposals would stop claims regarding knowingly false labels.
McConnell said that much of the nation’s obesity problem could be solved by common sense and discipline, not by suing someone, reported Reuters.
When asked if McDonald’s should have a label warning people not to eat too many Big Macs, McConnell said: “Some things are obvious.”
