Concern is mounting in Australia at reports that US food giant Conagra is mulling the sale of its meat processing division, including international operations. Conagra owns Australia Meat Holdings, Australia’s largest meat processor.
Recent articles in the American Cattle Buyers Weekly magazine imply the sale of the meat division to a consortium is very much in the pipeline. Magazine editor Steve Kay, said if the deal goes ahead, it is most probable that the Australian division would be sold separately, quite likely to another multinational company already active in Australia.
Kay commented: “I’ve often wondered what Cargill Foods is doing in Australia with its relatively small presence, and by what it’s doing I mean they’ve taken a foothold which is well-established, but they’ve never shown any inclination to grow their beef and sheep business in Australia and maybe Cargill, which takes a very long-term view of its operations worldwide, would be sitting there thinking that they would be interested in AMH.
“You know that’s just speculation on my part though.”
