PowerBar Inc. has been named as an Official Supplier to the U.S. Olympic Team, marking the first time that an energy food has been officially aligned with America’s athletes. The suppliership will also encompass the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, and the 2002 and 2004 U.S. Olympic Teams in the Nutritional Energy Bar category.
In this agreement with the Olympic Properties of the United States (OPUS), the joint marketing effort between the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), PowerBar will provide America’s Olympic Team with unlimited access to its nutritional energy bars via the U.S. Olympic training centers.
“PowerBar nutritional energy bars have been a regular part of the training regime for many U.S. Olympic Team members throughout their competitive careers. This suppliership brings PowerBar closer to America’s Olympians and Olympic hopefuls by incorporating their product into nutritional programs at U.S. Olympic Training Centers across the country and the Olympic Village during the 2002 Games. We’re pleased to name PowerBar as an Official Supplier of America’s Olympic Team and the 2002 Olympic Winter Games,” said Mark Lewis, OPUS President and CEO.
In support of its U.S. Olympic Team alliance, PowerBar will unveil a U.S. Olympic Team-themed television commercial in June that features many of its sponsored athletes, including Jason Kidd, Michael Johnson, Brandi Chastain and Dan O’Brien. At a recent shoot for the television commercial, more than 10 world-class athletes were united in a recording studio to sing the “PowerBar Anthem” and take part in a parody of “We Are The World,” the 1986 coalition of musical artists.
In addition, the U.S. Olympic Team Official Supplier designation will be celebrated on PowerBar nutritional energy bars with the symbolic U.S. Olympic Team Official Supplier logo being prominently displayed on packaging.
“At PowerBar, we have always tried to recognize the Olympic spirit in our products and in our corporate environment,” said Brian Maxwell, PowerBar founder and former top-ranked international marathoner and member of the 1980 Canadian Olympic Team. “Our company sponsors more than 2,000 athletes each year, from athletes at the very beginning of their U.S. Olympic Team pursuits to those at the pinnacle of their careers. This new relationship with the U.S. Olympic Team completes the cycle.”
