US meat processor Perdue Farms has announced that it is moving production from its Showell, Maryland, processing plant to other facilities.

The move will result in the closing of the Showell processing plant on 5 November 2004, but the company said all Showell’s 326 employees will be offered continued employment and Perdue will continue to contract with all its Showell producers.

“We’re simply moving Showell production to our Salisbury, Maryland, and Georgetown, Delaware, processing plants,” said Mike Roberts, president of Perdue’s poultry operations.

“The Showell facility is the only plant in Perdue operating only one shift. In addition, the Showell plant was going to require significant capital investments. It made good business sense to move Showell’s production to other facilities that didn’t require the same costly upgrades,” added Roberts.
