An agreement has been signed for Minneapolis, Minn.-based pickle manufacturer M.A. Gedney Company to acquire the pickle and related products business from Cains Foods LP, of Ayer, Mass., it was announced today.
Under terms of the agreement, Gedney would acquire the Cains’ plant located in South Deerfield, Mass., which manufactures pickles, peppers, relish and sauces for sale under the Cains and Oxford brands. Cains will continue to manufacture and distribute its Cains All Natural Mayonnaise and Salad Dressings products from its manufacturing plant in Ayer, Mass.
Gedney President Jeff Tuttle, a fifth-generation descendant of Gedney Founder Mathias A. Gedney, said that Gedney’s present plans would be to continue operating the South Deerfield plant with its existing workforce, and some additional management talent from Gedney.
Tuttle also indicated that, if the deal is finalized, Gedney would continue to rely primarily on local sources of supply in the Deerfield area market. The transfer of ownership is expected in mid-August, the companies said.
“We’re very pleased to have a company like M.A. Gedney purchasing our pickle and related products business,” said Denis Keaveny, president of Cains Foods LP. “It shares Cains’ longstanding commitment to high quality, locally produced products.”
“Cains is one of the leading regional pickle brands in the country today, and it fits very well with the Gedney culture of quality and customer service,” Tuttle said. “We’re very interested in continuing to expand the Cains business, and in meeting our new customers’ needs.
