Sacramento, known for the political hot air that fills California’s Capitol, will soon get its fill of hot doughnuts as Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc. (Nasdaq: KREM – news), opens its first store in the capital city on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The store, located at 3409 Arden Way near the corner of Watt Avenue, will open its doors at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday as the “Hot Doughnuts Now” light illuminates to usher in the arrival of Krispy Kremes to Sacramento.

“This is an especially exciting opening because it’s more than a new store for us. It’s a homecoming,” said Brad Bruckman, Krispy Kreme area developer for Northern California. “We made Sacramento our hometown two years ago, based our franchise headquarters here and now we’re here to do what we really do best — make Krispy Kreme doughnuts.”

Like Krispy Kremes across the nation, the Sacramento store will feature drive-through service, lots of seating and a glass viewing area so customers can see the doughnuts actually being made. The “Hot Doughnuts Now” sign lights up every time the store is making its Original Glazed doughnuts so fans know when they are coming off the machine hot.

For Krispy Kreme fans throughout the Sacramento region, the arrival is an end to a long wait — longer for some than for others. For Jackie McDaniel of Rancho Murieta, the wait started in 1954 after she relocated to California from her hometown of Nashville. Since then, Krispy Kremes, once a regular weekend treat, were rare delights experienced only on annual trips east to see family. Once, an aunt offered to send frozen Krispy Kremes through the mail, but McDaniel declined. It just wouldn’t have been the same.

“I’m going to be the first customer,” McDaniel said. “There simply isn’t anything you can compare to Krispy Kremes — they’re so light and airy, and they look so beautiful. They’re just what a doughnut should be.”

The Sacramento Krispy Kreme will employ up to 150 people and offer fast, friendly counter service seven days a week. To assure quality and consistency, Krispy Kreme produces its own doughnut mix and its own equipment. Beverages such as Berkeley Farms Chug milk, Pepsi sodas, fruit juices, bottled water and, of course, coffee are also available at Krispy Kreme stores.

Krispy Kreme has its own specialty blend of coffee made from a selection of 100 percent arabica beans. The coffee beans are ground fresh in stores for each individual pot of brewed coffee to ensure that customers enjoy a delicious cup of smooth, rich coffee at all times.

Bruckman and his wife, Maria, opened two Krispy Kreme stores earlier this year in the Bay Area and plan to open their next one in Citrus Heights this winter.

Founded in Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1937, Krispy Kreme quickly became a Southern tradition and today is expanding throughout the country. Krispy Kreme currently operates more than 150 stores in 27 states. An estimated 3.5 million Krispy Kreme doughnuts are made each day.
