An educational video co-produced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has been awarded an Emmy by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-Atlantic Region.
“Dr X and the Quest for Food Safety” follows the trials and tribulations of food scientist, Dr X, and a student as they investigate food safety laboratories and technologies from behind the scenes.
The FDA hopes that the video will introduce and reinforce the scientific concepts behind the spread of microbes and how to ensure food safety. It was designed as a component of the supplementary food-science curriculum “Science and Our Food Supply”.
The video competed in the category “Outstanding Children’s Program/One-time Only Special” and Joseph A. Levitt, director of FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, commented: “Receiving the Emmy for ‘Dr X and the Quest for Food Safety’ demonstrates that science programs can be creative and entertaining while at the same time providing valuable information to students.”
