A large-scale caviar smuggling operation has been broken by US customs officials.

A Russian businessman set up a network of ‘mules’ who carried suitcases filled with tins of caviar illegally harvested from sturgeon in the Caspian Sea into Los Angeles and Miami airports, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The ring had grown to the point that it was taking more caviar into the US each year than Russia is legally allowed to export anywhere in the world.

Caspian sturgeon are protected by an international treaty, but the US Fish and Wildlife Service recently reported that numbers had fallen so low that it recommended they be added to the endangered species list. This would cut off all legal imports into the US, the report states.
