Americans are eating healthier than they did five years ago, according to the Fresh Trends produce consumption report.

Consumers reported buying more fresh produce, (an increase of 18%), with the biggest consumption increase among those aged 18 to 37. Large gains were also reported in households with children less than six years of age, where 25% are using fresh fruit as a snack more frequently.

Annually, Americans are preparing meals with fresh produce on 161 days, and increasingly using pre-trimmed, washed and bagged produce (27% increase over 1998). The biggest gain in this category was in households with children aged 13 to 17. Organic consumption has also increased, mostly in homes with annual incomes of US$85,000 or more.
