A steady diet of soybean products may help prevent high blood pressure, according to American and Chinese researchers, who followed 302 patients with early signs of high blood pressure or full-blown hypertension.

Divided into two groups – one ate soybean supplements while the other ate wheat-based carbohydrates – the soy group experienced significant drops in blood pressure levels. One theory is that soy proteins widen blood vessels while helping the body process blood sugar more effectively.

Researchers caution that results are preliminary and people with high blood pressure should stick to proven strategies of consuming low-fat, low-salt diets with exercise and medication if necessary. The findings appear in the current issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.
