Burger King Corporation (BKC) today announced that it has approved a $15M, 3-year contract to the Philadelphia- based Union Packaging to provide folding cartons to more than 1,250 Burger King restaurants in the U.S. The contract will be administered by Restaurant Services Inc. (RSI), the purchasing agent for the Burger King Corporation system in the U.S. Production, which is targeted to begin August 14, 2000, is expected to generate 50 new jobs in the community primarily earmarked for those currently without manufacturing experience, Union Packaging officials said.
“We are pleased that Burger King has selected our company to help them handle increased consumer demand for folding carton products,” Mike Pearson, president of Union Packaging said. “Not only does this mean growth for our company, but it also translates into true economic empowerment and jobs for about 50 Philadelphia-area residents.” According to Pearson, the starting pay for production employees working on the Burger King account will be approximately $9.50 per hour.

Union Packaging, a minority business enterprise, is a joint venture between Providence Packaging and Dopaco. Providence Packaging was founded in 1997 by Michael Pearson, who envisioned creating a minority-owned packaging company that understood and delivered top customer service and quality products. In 1999, Pearson partnered with Dopaco, a national manufacturing company with headquarters in Exton, Pa., to form Union Packaging. Dopaco is a major manufacturer and employer in the restaurant industry with sales exceeding $300M.
BKC is a member of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) and its intent in achieving world-class procurement status. Both BKC and RSI have committed their resources to increase procurement from approved minority suppliers.
