US agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland has said it plans to increase its liquid sorbitol production capacity by 60% by the end of the year.
ADM said it plans to achieve this through an expansion of its Decatur, Illinois facilities. The company said its corn operation in Decatur would supply dextrose to the sorbitol plant, reported Dow Jones News Service.
Sorbitol, which is made by hydrogenating dextrose, is used as a sugar-free sweetener.
A spokeswoman for the company said the plant would have a production capacity of 360 million pounds of sorbitol per year once the expansion is complete.
