Vantage Foods is recalling around 1,642lb of ground beef products as a result of possible contamination.

A consumer found pieces of blue plastic in the ground beef, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said on Friday (19 August). The consumer returned the product to their retailer, which in turn notified Vantage Foods.

The products were produced on 15 August this year and were distributed to retail outlets in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

FSIS and the company said they have received no reports of adverse reactions from consumption of these products.

The two pound trays of fresh ground beef under the Lowe’s Foods brand has an establishment number of EST. 34176 inside the USDA mark of inspection and a sell by date of 8/29/11 on the label.

“Food Safety is very important to our company and we are disappointed the plastic was inadvertently introduced into production of some grind product,” said Leonal Kilgore, president and COO Vantage Foods US.
