Tesco has earmarked over 40 further sites in inland California for its US food retail business Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market.

The business, which is to begin trading in southern California, Nevada and Arizona in November, is looking to expand throughout the so-called Golden State.

Tesco said its Riverside distribution centre is projected to employ up to 2,000 people, while the additional 48 stores are expected to bring nearly 1,400 additional jobs to the area.

The number of Fresh & Easy jobs will increase as the company continues to secure sites in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, Tesco said.

“The fast-growing Inland Empire is an ideal location for our neighbourhood markets,” said Tim Mason, Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market’s CEO. “Everyone wants fresh, wholesome food at affordable prices. When our stores begin opening later this year, our customers will see this is exactly what we are providing to the neighbourhood.”
