Michigan-based retailer Spartan Stores has appointed Dennis Eidson as chief executive officer.
Eidson will succeed current CEO Craig Sturken who will continue in his role as executive chairman of the board until the position becomes effective on 15 October.
Currently president and chief operating officer, Eidson will also continue in his role until the effective date.
As CEO, he will focus on developing and executing the board-approved, consumer-centric business strategies and leveraging the company’s hybrid business model, the company said today (8 August).
“For the past 24 months, our board has been engaged in CEO succession planning,” said Sturken. “I have worked with our board to assess our critical leadership needs and to ensure that we selected the right individual to lead us through our future growth stages.

Eidson joined Spartan Stores in March 2003 as executive vice president of marketing and merchandising before being appointed to the board of directors and as company president.
He has accumulated around 32 years of grocery industry knowledge and experience, and held the position of divisional president and CEO of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company’s Midwest region, before joining Spartan Stores.
