Belgian retailer Delhaize has appointed Roland Smith to head up its US division.

Smith will take up the role of president and CEO of Delhaize America and executive VP of Delhaize Group with effect from 15 October.

He will succeed Ronald Hodge who, after a 33-year tenure with the retailer, will remain with Delhaize America in an advisory role before retiring later this year.

Smith most recently served as president and CEO of fast food chain The Wendy’s Co.

Earlier this month, Delhaize reported a 13.3% drop in underlying half-year operating profit as a result of “substantial” price investments at Food Lion as part of a brand repositioning at the US chain.
