Uncertainty surrounds the future of CF Sauer Co.’s margarine assets following its sale to US agribusiness Bunge.
The acquisition includes the margarine plant in Sandston, Virginia and the margarine production and packaging assets at CF Sauer’s facility in New Century, Kansas. The sale price has not been disclosed.

Bunge said yesterday (15 August) that it intends to hire most of the employees at the Sandston plant but a spokesperson did not comment on potential job losses. The site operates with about 160 employees.
Bunge will begin operating the Sandston facility immediately and intends to relocate the margarine production and packaging assets from the New Century facility to other Bunge packaging plants.
Soren Schroder, president and CEO of Bunge North America, said: “With this additional capacity, we are strengthening our integrated food and ingredient value chain to provide additional products, improved risk management and better logistics to customers.”
The two facilities produce 400m pounds of margarine a year and their products range from the small portions used in restaurants to one-ton totes sold to food processors.
