The obesity rate among Americans has peaked, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US.

The statistics suggest male obesity rates have remained constant for at least five years and roughly 10 years for US women and children – indicating “a plateau” according to an agency report.

However, the impact on food manufacturers and retailers is muddied by uncertainty over whether Americans have improved their lifestyles or there is actually a biological limit to obesity in the US.

Around 34% of US adults are now obese – a rate that has doubled in 30 years. African-American adults are fattest: 37% of men and 50% of women are obese.
