Nestle has warned consumers of a likely shortage of its Libby’s Select canned pumpkin this holiday season, because wet conditions have meant a poor pumpkin harvest.

“The shortfall in the crop yield is significant – which is why we chose to announce the likely shortage,” a spokesperson for the group told just-food.

“There are acres of farmland surrounding Morton, Illinois, covered in Libby’s Select pumpkins–but we can’t rescue them. The fields are saturated; rainfall has been record-setting this season, so our trucks and tractors end up buried in the mud.”

Declining to comment on the financial impact of the shortfall, the spokesperson said that the group has been in contact with its retail customers throughout the harvest.

“Retailers have been on allocation. Many have posted signs at our shelf location in their stores to advise their shoppers that there could be shortages due to crop shortfall.”
