Cardinal Foods, based in North Carolina, is to increase production amid growing demand at home and abroad, it has announced.

The company said it is investing in manufacturing more sweet-potato fries at its factory in Burgaw in the south of the state. Corey Barnhill, Cardinal Foods’ president and CEO, said: “This expansion will close the gap in offering North Carolina growers a viable solution for processing their crops and open up global markets that were limited previously.”

According to 2019 data from the US Department of Agriculture, North Carolina accounted for more than 60% of the country’s production of sweet potatoes.

More than 40 jobs will be created through the project, including roles for supervisors and production managers. Forty-eight staff will be taken on, doubling Cardinal Foods’ workforce.

Founded in 2017, Cardinal Foods processes blueberries, sweet potatoes and butternut squash. Its foods are sold to consumer brands and grocery retailers.

The company is owned by Southeastern Grain Co., a network of grain elevators that buys grain from local farmers.
