US condiments maker Mizkan Americas has moved to broaden its business with the acquisition of pepper processor and enchilada sauce maker Border Foods.
The deal, announced yesterday (12 May) for an undisclosed sum, is part of plans at Japanese Mizkan Group – the parent of Mizkan Americas – for “global expansion of its retail, branded, food ingredients and foodservices businesses”, the US unit said.
Border Foods, based in New Mexico, processes Green Chile, Jalapeno and Tomatillo peppers and makes branded and private-label enchilada sauces.
“We look forward to the continuing growth of Border Foods as this acquisition broadens strategic diversification in this sector,” Mizkan EuroAmericas president Craig Smith said. “The Hispanic foods market has seen aggressive growth over the last few years, and is projected to reach over US$8bn in 2011. We are pleased to now have a position in this growing market with Border Foods’ quality products.”
In the last three years, Mizkan has extended its business through acquisition in the US. In 2008, Mizkan Americas bought Imperial Brands‘ speciality and gourmet division, including a number of cooking wine and vinegar products.
Last year, the company also acquired World Harbors Sauces & Marinades, which included the World Harbors brand and Buccaneer Blends sauces.
