The US has asked for talks at the WTO over India’s ban on imports of poultry meat and chicken eggs from the country.
India has banned some agricultural products from the US since 2007 due to fears over avian influenza.
However, Washington claims the ban is “unjustified”. It says there has not been an outbreak of high pathogenic avian influenza since 2004. Low pathogenic avian influenza has been detected in the US since then although Washington claims that is no basis for the ban.
“India’s ban on U.S. poultry is clearly a case of disguising trade restrictions by invoking unjustified animal health concerns. The United States is the world’s leader in agricultural safety and we are confident that the WTO will confirm that India’s ban is unjustified,” US Trade Representative Ron Kirk said yesterday (6 March).
