Frito-Lay has yet to decide whether to put claims on its products that unsaturated fat can curb the risk of heart disease.


The snack foods unit of food and beverage giant PepsiCo has notified the US Food and Drug Administration about its health claims on unsaturated fat.


Frito-Lay, which produces brands including Doritos and Tostitos, told the FDA about its claim that replacing saturated fat with similar amounts of unsaturated fats may reduce the risk of heart disease. The company had insisted that to achieve this benefit, total calories should not increase.


However, Frito-Lay has insisted that no decision has been made on which products will carry the claim.


“Frito-Lay has no current plans to introduce the defined claim in advertising or on packaging,” a spokesman told just-food last night (29 May).
