The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reportedly urged consumers to avoid eating products that contain peanut butter until authorities have investigated the salmonella outbreak.
The US health authority told reporters in a conference call that “as of now” there is no indication that the major name-brand peanut butters are linked to the recall and that “most” appears to be safe, but to avoid eating cookies, cakes, ice cream and other products until more has been learnt about the contamination.
To date, around 474 people have fallen ill in 43 states, and at least 90 have been hospitalised. Six deaths are being blamed on the outbreak.
Officials are focusing on peanut paste, as well as peanut butter, produced at a Georgia facility owned by Peanut Corp. of America (PCA).
PCA has recalled all peanut butter produced at the Georgia plant since 8 August and all peanut paste produced since 26 September.

Kellogg – supplied by Peanut Corp – has recalled 16 products, while Midwest supermaket chain Hy-Vee said Saturday (17 January) that it was voluntarily recalling products made in its bakery departments with peanut butter. Perry’s Ice Cream is also recalling selected ice cream products.
