Some 43% of Americans would purchase chocolate that promised to improve their health, a study from Swiss chocolate producer Barry Callebaut claims.

Slightly more consumers – some 45% – insisted they would be willing to pay more for “health enhancing” chocolate, according to the survey of 1,000 US adults.

Almost a quarter of Americans eat sugar-free chocolate but only 12% eat functional chocolate, products that have been tested and shown to provide health benefits.

“Americans are developing a taste for more sophisticated chocolate and are experimenting with different varieties – from single-origin chocolate to organic chocolate to chocolate that offers healthful benefits,” said Massimo Garavaglia, Barry Callebaut’s president of food manufacturers and gourmet and specialties in North America.
