General Mills has decided to use new sweeteners in selected Yoplait yoghurts on sale in the US and Canada.

The company has dropped aspartame from certain Yoplait products and turned to sucralose and stevia.

Zero-calorie, natural sweetener stevia will feature in a specific Yoplait Source line in Canada next year.

Food and drink manufacturers have been eyeing how to use stevia as they seek to target a growing number of consumers interested in healthier products. Stevia has been mainly used in soft drinks, into which, according to some industry watchers it has proved easier to include. However, stevia has appeared in some food products in categories including yoghurt and ice cream.

General Mills is also rolling out other Yoplait Source lines in Canada that will contain sucralose. A spokesperson said a “variety of new dessert flavours” containing sucralose will be avaliable for August.

Asked why General Mills was offering different Yoplait Source products with different sweeteners in Canada, the company said: “Consumer choice. Our loyal Source consumers love the product as it is and want it to remain that way. Introducing Source with Stevia will bring new consumers to the Yoplait family of brands.”

In the US, General Mills will replace the aspartame in the entire Yoplait Light range with sucralose.

“This is something we’ve been considering and looking into for a while,” Steve Young, vice president for Yoplait, reflecting on the Yoplait Light switch, said. “We set out to accomplish this move to another sweetener, yet still provide a 90-calorie yoghurt option.”
