US baby food producer Beech-Nut Nutrition Corp. has opened a US$124m production facility in upstate New York.

The 650,000 sq ft plant in Montgomery County was built using “significant financial support” from New York State and will become the world’s first LEED-certified baby-food facility, the firm said yesterday (1 June).

“Our new facility and our impending LEED-certification puts Beech-Nut in a great position to grow our company and our brand,” said Jim Schneider, president and CEO. “It not only enhances our mission of providing the most nutritional baby food products in the marketplace, but just as important reinforces our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.”

The facility, located in the Florida Industrial Park, will employ around 500 staff and replaces Beech-Nut’s existing plants in Canajoharie and Fort Plain, New York.

Beech-Nut is a unit of Swiss food maker Hero Group.
