The UK government should increase the co-operation between its departments when formulating food policy, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has suggested.
“What we are particularly concerned about is having joined-up thinking from different government departments, so they are all singing from the same hymn sheet,” a spokesperson for the BRC told just-food this afternoon (10 August).
Speaking in response to the Department of Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) report on sustainability in the UK supply chain, the BRC emphasised that the government should avoid sending out a mixed message on food policy.
According to the industry body, UK retailers are already taking action on sustainability issues – ranging from nutritional labelling to providing affordable, healthy food.
“Obviously, food policy will only work if you get customers to support it,” the spokesperson said.
