Waitrose has announced it is to create 2,000 new jobs in 2014 through the opening of 26 shops in the UK.

Together, the new shops will add nearly 350,000 sq ft of selling space to the estate. The UK grocer has opened more than 100 branches of its 302 stores in the last five years.

Waitrose director of development Nigel Keen said: “During 2012 many of our new branches received than more than 10 applications for every vacancy – so we’re delighted to be able to create an additional 2,000 roles.”

He confirmed the company is continuing to focus on offering apprentice roles.

Waitrose announced in September last year it would create 500 jobs in London when it opens a second e-commerce grocery depot in Coulsdon this autumn to support growing online sales.
