Waitrose has unveiled plans to open its first convenience store in Trinity Square, Nottingham, in December.

It is hoped that the new-style store, which will offer a range of premium and specialist food, will help the UK retailer’s efforts to double the size of its business by 2017.

The new store concept will be trialled in Nottingham, with a further three outlets set to open in the spring of next year.

While the locations of these stores is yet to be determined, Waitrose said that the size of the outlet will range between 5,000 and 7,000 square feet.

Waitrose is also currently trialling its “market town” store format for shops of between 10,000 and 15,000 square feet.

Waitrose said that the convenience store will carry specialist cheeses, breads, a fresh meat and fish counter as well as a self-service food bar.

Waitrose managing director Mark Price said: “The new format further reinforces the strengths of our brand and the values that run throughout our business.

“We want to revive that old-fashioned personalised service in convenience shops, which consumers value, but within a fresh and contemporary setting.”
