Dutch meat giant Vion has lost a contract to supply poultry to UK retailer Sainsbury’s after the supermarket operator conducted a review of its chicken supply base.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s told just-food that the review was part of its 2020 sustainability plan. “Our goal is to ensure that we can continue to provide the highest quality produce at the best possible value for our customers whilst at the same time supporting British Farming and Agriculture,” the spokesperson said.

Sainsbury’s revealed that “as a consequence” of its sustainability planning process, it will consolidate its supply base for all chicken products into two suppliers, 2 Sisters Food Group and Moy Park, UK arm of Brazilian meat giant Marfrig

From February 2013, Vion will stop supplying Sainsbury’s chicken products.

“We are currently working with the supply chain, both new and old, to ensure that we continue to meet customer demand while we transition to the new suppliers,” the spokesperson said.

Commenting on the move, a Vion spokesman said the news was “disappointing” but added that the group will continue to cooperate with Sainsbury’s until the business is transferred to their new supply base.

“Sainsbury’s will continue to be a major client for the wider Vion UK business,” the spokesperson said. “Vion remains fully committed to maintaining a leading position in the UK poultry category.”
