The first overseas Waitrose store will open in three months after the upmarket UK grocer agreed a deal with Middle East retailer Spinneys.

Waitrose has agreed to license its name to Spinneys, which will use the banner for the first time in April in Dubai.

Two purpose-built Waitrose stores will open in Dubai later this year and the two companies plan to convert a further 20 Spinneys stores to the banner by 2010.

Commercial director Richard Hodgson said: “This agreement is set to accelerate export trade for Waitrose and marks a significant milestone in our international ambitions.”

Spinneys stores have sold Waitrose own-label products in Dubai and Abu Dhabi since 2004.
