The Seafood Company is to close a fish processing site in Inverness with the loss of over 320 jobs.

The UK firm, which makes chilled, own-label fish for UK multiples, said on Friday (23 January) its Strathaird Salmon site would close. Some 326 jobs will be lost.

The Seafood Company, which is a sister arm of Young’s Seafood, blamed rising energy costs and the economic downturn for the move.

The group said Strathaird Salmon would close due to the “significant capital” required at the site.

Strathaird Salmon MD Iain Herd said: “The need to make any redundancies is regrettable. However, we believe that through consolidation we can secure the long term growth and profitability of the business and  safeguard the future for our employees in Scotland.”
