UK supermarket chain Tesco has increased its share of the grocery retail market to 28.1% according to the latest industry data, which cover the 12 weeks to 18 July.
In the corresponding period of last year, Tesco’s market share was 26.7%, according to the till roll figures from TNS.
Meanwhile, Asda’s market share has increased to 16.5% compared to 16.2% a year earlier, while Sainsbury’s market share now stands at 15.5%, versus 16.3% a year earlier.
The combined market share of Morrisons and Safeway was 13.9% in the latest period, compared to 14.7% in the year-ago period, with Morrisons’ share rising to 6.3% from 5.8% and Safeway’s share falling from 9.0% to 7.6%.
“It is only to be expected that the Safeway share will decline as store conversions to the Morrisons fascia get underway but the fact that the combined share is declining increases the urgency of reversing the situation and establishing Morrisons as a national retailer,” said Edward Garner, communications director of TNS Superpanel.
