Tesco has installed heat-seeking technology to sense the number of customers entering its stores. This information can then be used to predict the number of cash registers a store will require at any given time.

The use of this cutting edge technology was revealed as the UK’s largest supermarket operator announced a record breaking first half at its results presentation yesterday (3 October).

The group’s chief executive Sir Terry Leahy said the technology would be introduced to improve service across the business.

“We’ve been testing them for a couple of years but now we’re rolling them out across the business,” he said. “It gives us an accurate picture of the pinch points when we need more staff on the tills.”
