UK supermarket chain Tesco has remained coy about the possibility of opening convenience stores in Las Vegas – maintaining the philosophy of wanting “customers to see it before the competition does”.
According to the Financial Times, the retailer is heading for the strip, and looking for sites in Las Vegas for a ‘Tesco Fresh & Easy’ range of mini-supermarkets.
The FT also revealed that Tesco has registered the Tesco Stores West and Tesco Stores Holdings names in the city’s home state of Nevada.
The UK’s number one chain plans to spend GBP250m (US$476m) opening convenience stores on the West Coast at the end of the current financial year, in February 2007. But the company has declined to comment on reports that it will also open stores in Vegas.
Tesco spokesperson Trevor Datson said: “We are not developing what we have said thus far; we want our customers to see it before the competition does.
