UK snack group Tayto has snapped up local crisp maker Jonathan Crisp, the company behind the “crisp for snobs”, for an undisclosed sum.

The deal is Tayto’s fourth acquisition in three years following its purchases of Golden Wonder in 2006, Real Crisps in 2007 and Red Mill Snack Foods last year.

Tayto said the Jonathan Crisp deal meant its turnover had grown from GBP15m (US$20.9m) to GBP150m within five years.

Jonathan Crisp, the trading name of Natural Crisps Ltd, supplies hand-fried and vegetable crisps to hotels, pubs and delis in the UK.

Tayto sales director John McQuaid said the acquisition of Jonathan Crisp had been a “distress purchase” and had been quickly completed.

“we had to move quickly to snap-up the brand and, unusually for these circumstances, completed the deal in just one week,” McQuaid said.

“We hope to emulate the success we have had with Golden Wonder, also at the point of collapse three years ago when we bought it and which we are now successfully re-building as a brand in Great Britain.”

Production for Jonathan Crisp is being carried out by family-owned firm Glennan’s, which is also based in Staffordshire.

“We are in the process of contacting Jonathan Crisp’s customers and suppliers and will be holding discussions with them over the coming weeks,” McQuaid said.
