Sainsbury’s has predicted that its fairtrade sales will grow by 145% to GBP130m (US$255m) in 2007. The supermarket group, which has the most fairtrade sales of any UK retailer, added that it expects fairtrade sales to increase to GBP200m by 2008.
Chief executive Justin King said the increase would primarily be driven by the company’s switch to fairtrade bananas, which is expected to be completed by July. Sainsbury also plans to switch all hot drinks sold in its restaurants to fairtrade.
“Supporting Fairtrade is a long-standing commitment at Sainsbury’s… In 1994, we were the first major multiple in the UK to launch fairtrade food, and we’re seeing record demand from our customers 13 years on,” King commented.
