Bernard Matthews is preparing to close its Grainthorpe factory in Lincolnshire – a move which sees 80 jobs at risk.

The firm has entered a 30-day staff consultation process.

Poor turkey sales, particularly over the key Christmas trading period, have meant the site is “no longer economically viable”, the company said.

Processing requirements will be transferred to the Norfolk and Suffolk sites.

“The company is currently entering into consultation with affected staff, which we understand may cause a degree of uncertainty for these individuals, but staff will be offered the opportunity to relocate to one of its other sites and they will be kept regularly updated throughout the process,” it added in a statement.
