Police are investigating the recall of Tesco own-label ice cream cones in the UK after painkiller tablets were found in the products.
In November, Tesco recalled packs of ice cream after the tablets were found in two individual cones. The products were made by a plant in North Yorkshire run by UK-based own-label ice cream supplier R&R Ice Cream.
This week, it has emerged police in the county are looking into the case amid suspicions the pills were put in the cones deliberately.
According to The Independent newspaper, Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn said his “gut instinct” was the tablets were knowingly placed into the ice cream.
“If it was felt to be accidental from the outset, the resources, we have put into it probably wouldn’t be to the scale we have done. We have got to look at it as we think it’s suspicious unless we prove otherwise,” Malyn said.
When contacted by just-food, R&R Ice Cream could not provide immediate comment.
