PepsiCo is to invest GBP9.3m (US$14.6m) in the expansion of its warehouse and distribution centre in the UK town of Peterlee.
The investment, PepsiCo said yesterday (15 March), will enable the firm to triple the size of its County Durham-based storage facility, which houses brands including Quaker Oats and Walkers crisps.
Once operational, the site will allow PepsiCo to take around 600,000km off the road per year, reducing delivery fleet distances. A number of ‘green features’ have also been introduced to the facility, including a 100% rainwater harvested fleet vehicle wash, energy-efficient cranes, low heating requirements and need-activated lighting.
PepsiCo UK senior supply chain director Jane Burkitt said : “I’m delighted to reveal our expansion. We’re seeing impressive growth across our brands, including Quaker Oats which we store here in Peterlee.
“Quaker has grown in the UK by 22% in the last three years and, with such an increase in demand, we’ve not only invested to produce more but also to store more Quaker Oats. Our expansion will help us to keep up with demand for many years to come.”
This is the second major manufacturing investment in the UK for PepsiCo this year. Last month, the snacks giant announced a GBP14.4m investment to increase the capacity at its Quaker Oats facility in Cupar in Scotland.
