Ocado said sales in the final quarter of 2010 increased by more than 27% as the company won customers and shoppers spent more on each delivery from the online grocer.

The UK group said today (10 January) that fourth-quarter gross sales increased 27.4% to GBP178.9m (US$277.3m) from the same period a year earlier. Despite the snow, Ocado delivered around 98% of customer orders in the four-week period to 26 December.

Average orders per week for the 16 weeks to 28 November increased by 28% to 99,741. The average order size for the period remained flat at GBP112.12.

Gross sales for the full-year were up 29% to GBP551.1m, with growth in both the number of customers and the spend-per-customer.

Ocado CEO Tim Steiner said: “We are delighted to see the continued growth in demand for Ocado, a record number of customers shopped with us in this period. This would not have been possible without the heroic efforts of our staff rising to the challenge of delivering a record number of orders in sometimes challenging conditions. Our plan for dealing with extreme weather conditions enabled us to make over 98% of deliveries in the affected period.”

Ocado’s preliminary results will be issued on 1 February.
