Food and clothing retailer Marks and Spencer has announced a 3.1% fall in its UK retail sales in its first quarter, the 14 weeks to 9 July 2005, but food sales were up by 5.0%.
Food has performed well, the company said. We have improved product innovation, service and availability and there has been a positive reaction to our recent advertising campaign which highlights our outstanding quality and value.
“The trading environment continues to be very tough,” said Stuart Rose, chief executive. “We are pleased with the progress in food with its return to like for like sales growth.”
