UK retailer Marks and Spencer has appointed non-food executive Sacha Berendji as director of retail, replacing Steve Rowe, who is set to lead its food division.
Berendji, merchandising director for M&S’s general merchandising arm, will start his role on 1 December.
Berendji will report to chief executive Marc Bolland and will also be a member of the management committee. He will be in charge of running all of M&S’s store operations including general merchandise and Simply Food stores, a spokesperson said.
He has worked with M&Sfor 18 years, spending the majority of his time in retail. The company has yet to announce a replacement for his role.
The move comes a day after the retailer announced Rowe will become executive director for its food arm in October. He replaces John Dixon, who has been switched to executive director of its general mercandise division. Dixon replaces Kate Bostock, who M&S said yesterday will leave “by mutual consent” after months of speculation.
M&S yesterday reported a fall in first-quarter sales. A fall in clothing sales offset higher food sales.
